CHFH was founded in 1989 by local citizens that were concerned with the large quantity of people living in substandard housing. Since it’s founding, Charleston Habitat for Humanity has built 60 homes, housing 300 people.
Habitat for Humanity International and it’s affiliates represent more than 3,000 communities in 100 nations, and have built more than 200,000 homes since 1976. Habitat selected families invest 500 hours of “sweat equity” and purchase the house on a no-profit, no-interest 20 year mortgage. The money generated from these mortgages goes into a revolving fund “Fund for Humanity” which supports the construction of more homes. Habitat homeowners pay taxes and escrow items just like everyone else. Homeowners are also required to attend monthly workshops ranging in topics from home maintenance to budget management.
