Volunteer Opportunities & Sign-up













Current Volunteer Opportunities and Needs:

Charleston Habitat for Humanity regularly has four volunteer opportunities: Construction, ReStore, Committees, and Lunches. Please read the information below on these options and use the contact links to speak to Staff members in charge of these programs. We thank you for your interest in our organization.

Construction
We are in the process of finalizing funding or obtaining permits for our Fall 2011 home construction and rehabilitation projects. Please read the information below on our volunteering guidelines and check back to this page at the beginning of October when our volunteer calendar and online sign-up system will be accesible through the Volunteer Up link below. All volunteers must complete and bring with them to site the Volunteer Waiver Form. New Home Construction
A typical Habitat home is 3-bedrooms, 2-bathrooms, and totals 1,200 square feet. From foundation to CO, it takes 12-18 weeks to complete and we take volunteer groups of 15 people per shift, AM and PM, Wednesdays to Saturdays. We also build occasionally on Mondays and Tuesdays for pre-arranged groups. Construction experience is not required.

Home Repair
The home repair program takes volunteer groups ranging from 5-10 people. Projects take between 4-8 weeks to complete. Volunteer work includes roof repair, remodeling bathrooms and kitchens, weatherizing the home, and installing new doors and windows.

Thursday Crew
This is a group of men and women, young and old, who volunteer every Thursday to help build on our construction sites. Over the years, they have learned many construction skills and are most helpful in construction and leading volunteers.

ReStore
Our ReStore is located at 731 Meeting Street. We take donations of furniture, appliances, and building materials to resell to the community at reduced prices with the funds going to our mission of affordable housing. the store is open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm. Individual and small group (up to six) volunteers can work either a half-day or full-day and help with pricing and arranging donated items, scheduling pick-ups, answering the phone, and any other store operations. Volunteers are supervised at all times.

The ReStore does take volunteers who are required to fulfill court-ordered community service hours. For this process and any additional information or questions, please contact our ReStore Manager, Joelle Sharisky, at 843-579-0777, or joelle@charlestonhabitat.org

Committees
Get involved at a deeper level and help us with more behind the scenes work by joining one of our committees. Most committees meet monthly for one hour. Our committees include the Construction Committee, Family Services Committee, ReStore Committee, and our Women Build Committee. Please view our Committee page to learn more by clicking click here.

Lunches
We are looking for individuals and businesses to provide lunch for our volunteers on the construction site. Lunches are needed for 15-20 people Wednesdays through Saturdays depending on our build schedule. You can come out to thes build site with the lunches yourself at 12 noon to meet the volunteers, or you can have the lunches delivered. Anything from pizza to penaut butter and jelly are greatly appreciated by our hungry volunteers.
